Reza Asal baa
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Reza Asal brings thirty years experience of working with people seeking freedom from pain and return to wellbeing, both physically and emotionally.

Initially
training as a masso-physiotherapist in western medicine, Reza specialised in sport injuries massage in Florence in 1990s.  In 1998 he began training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including acupuncture and traditional Chinese massage (Tuina).  At the same time he trained in Bach

Before moving to UK, Reza had a studio at the Institute of Wushu in Florence where he treated
martial artists and
athletes.  He was also the club physiotherapist for a local football team for many years.

Symptoms and issues people routinely bring to work with:

The World Health Organisation has identified the benefits of TCM in the treatment of a wide range of problems.  Whilst Reza sees clients who are experiencing a diverse range of chronic issues, some of the more common health concerns are:

  • Urinary, menstrual and reproductive disorders
  • Muscular and skeletal conditions: arthritis, back pain, back pain, jaw pain, plantar fasciitis, knee conditions, strains, tendonitis, tennis elbow, sciatica and sport injuries
  • Respiratory problems such as: sinusitis, bronchitis and asthma
  • Stress, anxiety, insomnia, anger, depression, panic attacks, fatigue
  • Digestive and gut issues: gastritis, hyperacidity, IBS, constipation, diarrhoea
  • Neurological: headaches, trigeminal neuralgia

What you can expect from our work together

"Traditional Chinese Medicine has taught me to treat the body as a whole, not just the injured area. Simply treating the part which ‘hurts’ is only seeing the tip of the iceberg and does not resolve the root problem.  My approach is to treat the root problem through a combination of western masso-physiotherapy and TCM."

An initial consultation lasts 90 minutes.  In this session Reza gathers information to identify underlying patterns of symptoms and decide upon the most effective treatments.  He will discuss a treatment plan with you and with your agreement will start with a preliminary treatment which could be massage, acupuncture or other pressure point treatment.

Subsequent sessions

The length and regularity of subsequent treatment sessions will depend on individual conditions.  However, a typical treatment session lasts one hour.  During a one hour treatment a combination of the following approaches may be used: Cupping, Moxibustion, Guasha, Plum Blossom Needle Treatment, Qi Kung/Breathing Exercises, Medical Massage (Tui Na) alongside Acupuncture.

Reza may recommend lifestyle changes which will support your treatment including meditation, breathing practices, exercises and diet.

How long will it take to get well?

Clients often ask how long it will take to get well.  Usually the health issues that people bring have been accumulating for some time. Therefore, it takes time for a full return to wellbeing.  However, in less severe cases he would expect the client to experience some relief from their more recent complaint within the first session.

I have been seeing Reza for over nine years now and have been very pleased with the treatment I have received.  I have had various problems starting with a fall, when I knocked my shoulder out.  In addition to joint, neck and back problems, Reza has treated my chest and sinus problems too. Over the years his treatment has always helped to restore my general health and well-being.  Noticeable changes in energy levels after his treatments have been amazing.  I cannot recommend Reza enough. IT WORKS!

- Terry Mansfield

I have known Reza Asal since the early 1990s when he was a practising therapist at The Wushu Institute in Florence, where I was a practising athlete, teacher of martial arts and part of the management team.

Reza Asal was a highly respected practioner of Chinese therapies: acupuncture, Chinese massage, qigong, which he delivered to the athletes of all the range of martial arts offered at the centre.

Reza had a reputation for giving highly effective treatments with swift results, usually after the first or second treatment. I myself benefited many times from his excellent treatment for my back injury and later for a groin injury, which I have to say, he managed to cure, where other practitioners had failed.

I cannot speak highly enough of Reza’s professionalism and excellent ability in his field.

More information
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the main forms of treatment in traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the use of sharp, thin needles that are inserted into the body at very specific points. This process is believed to adjust and alter the body’s energy flow into healthier patterns, and is used to treat a wide variety of illnesses and health conditions.
cupping
Cupping involves placing glass, bamboo or plastic jars on the skin and creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying issue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup.

The purposed of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins that linger in your body’s tissues.
moxibustion
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris), but it can be made of other substances as well.

Moxibustion is used for:

  • Pain due to injury or arthritis, especially in “cold” patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat
  • Digestive problems and irregular elimination
  • Gynaecological conditions, including breech presentation in late term pregnancy
  • Protection against cold and flu
Medical massage (tui na)
Tui Na treats chronic pain, especially that caused by muscle-skeletal conditions and injuries. Neck, shoulder and back pain and immobility, sciatica and ‘tennis elbow’ all respond very well. It is, however, impossible to treat a specific condition with Tui Na without improving the overall Qi status of the body. This means that headaches, migraines, IBS, constipation, PMS and a whole range of emotional problems can also be treated.

Because it is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine and because it employs the same principles, Tui Na can also be used as a complement to acupuncture treatment. Using both treatment modalities can be an effective approach to working with energy and addressing and restoring its flow.

It relieves a variety of disorders. Tui Na massage can relieve multiple disorders including insomnia, constipation, headaches, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, and emotional problems. It can also treat disorders related to digestive, respiratory, and reproductive systems. Many people seek the treatment for stiff neck, distension of shoulders, sciatica, and sore back. Tui Na can be used to address both internal diseases and external injuries.
gua sha
Gua sha is a method of scraping the skin with a massage tool to improve the circulation of soft tissue which increases blood flow and stimulates stagnant energy.

Gua Sha is used for Inflammation reduction, therefore helpful for chronic pain as such as arthritis , fibromyalgia, muscle and joint pains. It is also used for migraine, fascial tics and for cosmetic purposes.
Plum Blossom needle
This therapy is also known as dermal needling and seven star needling is is very effective for chronic aching and muscle and joint pain. It can be a valid treatment for post-stroke paralysis, cerebral palsy and hair loss. It is also used for cosmetic applications such as the treatment of wrinkles.

A flexible handle is attached to a head of needles which lands quickly and gently on the area to be treated.
chi kung breathing
The way we breathe has a huge impact on how we feel. The ability to properly regulate our breathing can have numerous benefits. For example panic attacks can be quickly relieved through regulating the breath.

Qi Gong exercises enhance breathing and the flow of Energy (Qi) through the body bringing significant improvements in many areas of health.
